Little is known of the life of Rafael Sandoval, save that his work in the field of biomechanics, specifically that involving the creation of artificial life forms is said to have been "visionary." He apparently taught a number of students what he knew, one of whom is Dr. Natas Reficul, who could be said to be the true inheritor of his work, along with his daughter, Kyra Sandoval.

The details and circumstances of Dr. Reficul's final project and his subsequent disappearance are not entirely clear. What is known is that Sandoval was engaged by a coalition of scientists and high-ranking members of the Universal Church to "solve" an ancient riddle contained in the Dead Sea Scrolls, concerning ultimate immortality. Sandoval's solution to the problem was to go to the source, creating a trio of artificial humanoids--Ain, Ain Soph, and Ain Soph Aur and imbue them with what he called the "Empyrean"--that is, the underlying creative energy of the universe itself. The specifics of his tapping of the Empyrean are as yet unclear, however it is known he used a local gravitational singularity as a focusing lens to access the power.

The ultimate result of the project is unknown. While Doctor Sandoval is assumed to be deceased, Each of the three artificial humanoids--now called Sinclaire, Silhouette, and Omega, respectively--has revealed to have survived the process, although none of them possessed a complete memory of the incident. Only Kyra Sandoval knows what happened, and she has thus far refused to disclose it to anyone.
